Yes, offering promotions is an excellent way to boost conversion, attract new customers, and drive reorders. On Faire, you can create shop wide, collection-specific, and product-specific promotions that will automatically apply when an eligible retailer checks out. You can customize the time frame, discount type, and eligible audience for your promotions—from broad audiences like all retailers on Faire down to customer segments or even individual customers.
You can also create promo codes to share with customers—these do not apply automatically. To learn more about promo codes, see Can I create custom promo codes?
How do I create a shop-wide promotion?
A shop-wide promotion applies a discount to all products in your shop.
You can choose from:
- Individual promotion: A single discount applied above a minimum order value (ex: 5% off orders over $300)
- Multiple-benefit promotion: A discount combined with free shipping (ex: 5% off and free shipping on orders over $300)
- Tiered promotion: Increasing discounts based on spend (ex: 5% off $300, 10% off $400, 15% off $500)
To create a shop-wide promotion:
- Go to Marketing, then select Promotions.
- Select Shop-wide from the Create promotion dropdown.
- Enter a name under Promotion name.
- Choose your audience and retailer countries under Promotion eligibility.
- Set start and end dates under Promotion dates.
- Add up to three tiers under Promotion tiers if needed.
- Choose your discount type and amount under Promotion details.
- Select Save promotion to make it live.
How do I create a promotion for a specific collection?
A collection-specific promotion applies a discount to all products within a specific collection in your shop. You can run multiple collection promotions at the same time, and they can run concurrently with a shop-wide promotion.
To create a promotion on a specific collection:
- Go to Marketing, then select Promotions.
- Select Collection-specific from the Create promotion dropdown.
- Enter a name under Promotion name.
- Choose your audience and retailer countries.
- Set start and end dates.
- Select a percentage discount under Product discount.
- Choose the collection under Collection.
- Select Save promotion.
If you do not yet have a collection set up, the Create Promotion button will not be available until you do.
A product can be included in multiple promotions at the same time, but each retailer will only receive one product-specific promotion per product. If a retailer qualifies for more than one, we’ll automatically apply the most relevant one based on the same priority order outlined here: If a retailer qualifies for multiple promotions, which one will they receive?
How do I create a promotion on a specific product?
A product-specific promotion applies a discount to one or more individual products in your shop. For example:
- 10% off your best seller
- 15% off your top 3 products
You can run multiple product-specific promotions at the same time, and they can run concurrently with an active shop-wide or collection-specific promotion.
To create a product-specific promotion:
- Go to Marketing, then select Promotions.
- Select Product-specific from the Create promotion dropdown.
- Enter a name under Promotion name.
- Choose your audience and retailer countries.
- Set start and end dates.
- Select the discount under Product discount.
- Choose products under Products (search by SKU, name, or tag).
- Select Save promotion.
How do I choose who is eligible for a promotion?
You can now target your promotions to specific retailer segments or even individual customers, giving you more control over who receives which discounts. This applies to any promotion type: shop-wide, collection-specific, or product-specific.
When setting up your promotion, you can choose from the following audience options:
- All customers: Your promotion will be available to all customers on Faire.
- New customers: Your promotion will only be available to customers who haven't placed an order with you before.
- Returning customers: Your promotion will only be available to customers who have previously placed an order with you.
- Specific customers: Your promotion will only be available to one or more individual customers that you select by name. Only customers who have a Faire account can be selected.
- Customer segments: Your promotion will only be available to customers who belong to a specific segment. Segments are created and managed in your Customers page. As long as a segment has customers added to it, it will appear in the dropdown when setting up your promotion. For more information, see here.
You can also choose whether the promotion can only be used once, or be used multiple times up to an expiry date.
How do customer segment promotions work?
With customer segment promotions, you can offer a discount to a specific group of retailers based on shared characteristics (ex: retailers who haven't reordered in 60 days, those with items left in their cart, or even contacts from trade shows). For more information on creating a customer segment, see Creating a custom email segment.
When you start a promotion, any retailer already in the segment you select will be eligible for the offer right away, and retailers who enter the segment later will be eligible from that point on. All eligible retailers will be able to use your promotion for 7 days after becoming eligible.
When you set the end date of your promotion, you are setting the last day that a retailer can become eligible for your promotion. Any retailer who becomes eligible before that date will still receive their full 7 days. Because expiry dates vary by retailer, avoid quoting a specific end date in any outreach or marketing you do for the promo, and instead be clear that the promotion is available to them for a limited time. Retailers can view details about the offer and how long they have to claim it by viewing your Shop page.
Can I run multiple promotions at the same time?
Yes, you can run multiple promotions at the same time, including promotions with overlapping audiences. Here are a few things to keep in mind when running multiple promotions at the same time:
- Each retailer can only receive one shop-wide promotion at a time.
- A retailer can receive a shop-wide promotion alongside multiple product-level or collection promotions at the same time, but they can only receive one product or collection promotion per product.
- When a shop-wide promotion runs at the same time as a product-specific or collection promotion, the product-level discount is applied first, then the shop-wide discount is applied to the already-discounted price.
- Ex: if you have a 10% off promotion on a $100 item and a 15% off shop-wide promotion, the customer would pay $76.50. The discounts are applied as follows:
- $100 x 10% off = $90
- $90 x 15% off = $76.50
- Ex: if you have a 10% off promotion on a $100 item and a 15% off shop-wide promotion, the customer would pay $76.50. The discounts are applied as follows:
Customer segment promotions (including promotions attached to open cart automations) are a type of shop-wide promotion. A retailer can only receive one shop-wide promotion at a time, and the priority logic above determines which one applies. They do not stack.
For more information on how we determine which promotion will apply if a retailer is eligible for multiple of your promotions at once, see If a retailer qualifies for multiple promotions, which one will they receive?
If a retailer qualifies for multiple promotions, which one will they receive?
A retailer can receive:
- One shop-wide promotion
- Multiple product or collection promotions (as long as the same product isn’t included in more than one promotion)
If a retailer is eligible for more than one of your shop-wide promotions, or more than one of your promotions containing the same product(s) at the same time, which one applies will be dependent on the following:
-
Specific customer promotions are applied instead of customer segment promotions and broad promotions (all, new, or returning retailers)
- ex: If a retailer qualifies for a customer segment promotion you're offering to your open cart leads, but you've also created a specific customer promotion for that same retailer, the specific customer promotion will apply.
-
Customer segment promotions will be applied instead of broad promotions (all, new, or returning customers). This includes promotions included in the open cart automation, which are treated as customer segment promotions and follow the same priority logic.
- ex: If a retailer has items in their cart and qualifies for your open cart automation promotion, but you've also created a shop-wide 5% off promotion for all retailers, the open cart (customer segment) promotion will apply instead of the shop-wide one.
-
Higher percentage discounts are applied instead of lower ones if a retailer qualifies for multiple customer segment promotions in the same category.
- ex: If a retailer qualifies for two customer segment promotions – one offering 10% off and one offering 15% off – they'll receive the 15% off promotion.
-
Tiered promotions are compared using their highest possible discount tier, even if the retailer hasn’t reached that spend threshold yet.
- ex: If a retailer qualifies for two customer segment promotions – one offering a flat 15% off, and one tiered promotion offering 10% off orders over $300 and 20% off orders over $500 – the tiered promotion will apply, since its highest tier % of 20% takes priority over the flat 15% off.
-
Promotions with free shipping are applied instead of those without if the discount percentage is the same.
- ex: If a retailer qualifies for two customer segment promotions both offering 15% off, but one also includes free shipping, the promotion with free shipping will apply.
Can I edit my promotion once it’s live?
Once a promotion is live you can't edit it, with the exception of the end date (which can be updated at any time before the promotion expires on the specific promotion’s page).
If you’ve created a specific customer or customer segment promotion and need to make changes to anything other than the end date once it’s live, you will need to deactivate the existing promotion and create a new one.
To deactivate a promotion:
- Go to Promotions.
- Select the promotion.
- Choose the option to End promotion and deactivate it.
Can I adjust the dates of a live promotion?
Yes, you can update the timing of a promotion in the following ways:
- Extend the end date of an active promotion
- Deactivate a promotion before it ends
If you extend a shop-wide promotion, it can’t overlap with another shop-wide promotion targeting the same audience.
Can I apply a promotion to an order that’s already placed?
No, promotions can’t be applied after an order is placed.
If you’d still like to give the retailer a discount for a specific item or collection, you can add the equivalent amount as a discount to the order total before fulfilling the order.
This can be done directly from your order summary page. To add a discount to the order:
- Open the order from your Orders page.
- Select Edit order.
- Add a percentage or fixed discount to the order total.
Additionally, you can't add a promotion or discount to an order that has already been fulfilled. If you'd like to offer a customer a discount on a fulfilled order, you'll need to apply it to their next order instead.
How do I notify customers about my promotions?
Once you’ve created a promotion, let your customers know about it using our tools:
- Email Campaigns: Send a promotion announcement to all of your customers, or target the same segment you've set your promotion up for. To get started, see Sending email campaigns through Faire
- Faire Messenger: Reach out to individual customers directly through Faire Messenger for a more personal, one-to-one message.
Eligible retailers will automatically have your promotion applied at checkout when placing their order.
How can I track my promotion’s performance?
Under your Promotions tab, you can see how many orders were placed using each of your promotions.
To check if a promotion was applied to a specific order:
- Go to Orders.
- Select the order.
- Review the Order summary for applied promotions.
Keep in mind that promotions aren't shown on the order packing slip.
If you're not seeing a promotion listed on an order, check your Promotions tab to confirm that the order meets the promotion requirements.
Do duties apply before or after promotions?
For orders exported to the US:
- Duties are calculated before promotions are applied
- If the order total exceeds $800 before discounts, duties may apply
- This applies even if the final total after discounts is below $800
To learn more, see A guide to selling internationally on Faire
Can I schedule a promotion?
Yes, you can set and schedule the timeframe for your promotion under your Promotions tab. On the last scheduled day, your promotion will expire at 11:59 pm in your time zone, regardless of where your customers are based.
Can I reuse a promotion?
Yes, you can reuse a promotion once it has ended or been deactivated.
To reuse a promotion:
- Go to Promotions.
- Select a past promotion.
- Select Reactivate promotion.
- Set new start and end dates.
- Select Reactivate promotion to confirm.
How do my promotions interact with Faire Markets?
During a Faire Market, shop-wide promotions targeting all retailers automatically become your market promotion for the duration of the event.
Any active or new shop-wide promotions targeting new or returning retailers only are unaffected and stay active as-is. Collection and product promotions also continue during a Faire Market without any changes.
Specific customer promotions and customer segment promotions are temporarily paused during a Faire Market. If your promotion was still within its active dates when the market ends, it will resume automatically. If you need to create a new promotion during the market, specific customer and customer segment targeting isn't available; you can only target all, new, or returning retailers.
