How do I submit a work order in ShipBob?

In this guide

Work orders let you request inventory-related tasks from ShipBob’s Operations team. There are four types of work orders, and providing clear, detailed instructions helps ensure your request is completed accurately and on time. Please reach out to fbfsupport@faire.com to get a quote for any work orders.

What types of work orders can I submit?

You can submit the following work order types in your ShipBob portal:

  • Kitting work orders: Combine multiple SKUs into a single, ready-to-ship kit.
  • De-kitting work orders: Break down a previously assembled kit into its individual components.
  • Breakdown case work orders: Open case-packed SKUs and convert them into individual units (“eaches”).
  • Disposal or donation work orders: Remove inventory through standard disposal, specialized disposal, or donation to a nonprofit.

Each work order type serves a unique inventory need and follows a separate process.

How do I submit a kitting work order?

Kitting work orders tell ShipBob how to prepare or repackage your inventory before it’s shipped to customers. These are required when:

  • Items arrive separately and need to be assembled or packaged together.
  • Inserts or dividers need to be folded into custom boxes.
  • Custom boxes require more than eight folds.
  • A SKU needs a barcode or sticker on individual units.
  • A SKU needs inspection.
  • A SKU needs to be converted from one inventory ID to another (ex: from single unit to case pick).

Fees
Kitting orders incur setup, picking, and task-based fees. Fee breakdowns are available in the shipbob Help center portal.

Inventory requirements
All items and the final kit must be synced and active in the Inventory section.

Self-contained orders
All supplies, including stickers or packaging, must be provided and stored under separate inventory IDs.

Unsupported requests
You can’t request plastic pallets, modified shipping labels, or custom labels without a PDF.

SLAs and extensions
Orders can be delayed if supplies or instructions are missing. If unresolved after 5 business days, items will be restocked and fees applied.

How to submit a kitting work order

  1. Go to Orders in your ShipBob dashboard.
  2. Select Work Orders, then Kitting.
  3. Choose a fulfillment center.
  4. Select the end-kitted product and enter the number of kits.
  5. Add all kit components, specifying quantity and required actions.
  6. Include detailed instructions and upload images if needed.
  7. Select Generate Price Estimate, then Create.

To edit, cancel the original order and choose Copy and Edit from the order details page.

How do I submit a de-kitting work order?

De-kitting work orders break down products that were previously assembled using a kitting work order.

You can view associated fees in the Shipbob help Center.

How to submit a de-kitting work order

  1. Go to Orders in your ShipBob dashboard.
  2. Select Work Orders, then De-Kitting.
  3. Choose a fulfillment center.

  5. Enter the number of kits to de-kit.
  6. Add the component items and quantities.
  7. (Optional) Add instructions or attachments.
  8. Select Submit Request.

How do I submit a breakdown case work order?

Breakdown case work orders convert case-packed inventory into individual sellable units (“eaches”).

Pricing and SLAs are available in your ShipBob portal.

  2. Select Work Orders, then Breakdown Case.
  3. Choose a fulfillment center.

  6. Search for and select the SKU representing the individual unit.
    • If it doesn’t exist, create it first.
    • Add Lot Number and Expiration Date if applicable.
  7. (Optional) Add simple instructions or upload a photo or PDF.
  8. Select Submit Request.

How do I submit a disposal or donation work order?

Disposal and donation work orders remove inventory through standard or specialized methods.

Disposal methods

  • Standard disposal: Items are placed in a standard dumpster.
  • Specialized disposal:
    • Certified destruction (with Certificate of Destruction)
    • Third-party pickup (transferred to a landfill)
    • Dangerous goods, HAZMAT, universal waste, etc.

ShipBob determines disposal type based on item configurations. Flag products correctly in your dashboard.

To request specialized disposal, contact Merchant Care via the dashboard. Provide:

  • Inventory IDs and quantities
  • Fulfillment center location
  • Disposal type (or request a recommendation)

Donation through GiveNKind (US only)

You must confirm with GiveNKind that they’ll accept your products before submitting a donation request.

Fees and restrictions
