I've spent many nights on the road after dark traveling to and fro as a professional musician. One of my favorite things after a performance is stopping on a quiet road and looking up at the stars. This painting is not one of those moments but I did use those memories as a reference. A few times in the winter, I have seen similar sunsets. It's one of those moments when the sun is gone but not even the orange glow is left. You can only see the faint blue of the last bit of light before all is dark. The warmth from the day is gone and the moisture that tried to escape the earth's gravity has lost its heat. It settles back down into a light fog instead. The moon is full and bright behind you. Even if stranded without light, it would be enough to lead you to someplace warm and safe.
