Blockprinted tote bag, depicting motifs of daily rural Warli life, in their distinctive traditional art-form style. Among the motifs is the hypnotic circular tarpa community dance. Made in a women's cooperative, WIT, in Bombay, India. WITÂ - one of my favorite acronyms - stands for Women's India Trust. Established in 1968 by Ms.Kamila Tyabji, WIT started by training less privileged and unskilled women in Bombay to stitch sari petticoats. The nature of activities at WIT has evolved with the changing needs of society, but as an organization, WIT has remained women-centric and continues to help women secure a better future. WIT is dedicated to the original vision of its founder, Mrs. Tyabji: to help women from underserved backgrounds to help themselves; to encourage them to acquire new skills; to give them the self-confidence and self esteem required to earn by their own industry and initiative; and to enable them to carry this newly discovered skill and confidence into the wider world. Handmade in Bombay, India.
Hand-blockprinted on thick unbleached cotton, with sturdy webbing straps. 100% Cotton. Unisex. Handmade in Bombay, India.
