As part of her commission as official war artist – the only woman to be so appointed – Dunbar documented the work of the Women’s Land Army. Here the women are at rest, attending to their evening meal of bangers and mash – a war-time staple. The colours are bright, and there is a lyrical comradery here: the working day is done; it is evening, time for nourishment and conviviality.
