Description

Scott Manor House is one of the most remarkable heritage properties in Nova Scotia, a registered provincial and municipal heritage property built circa 1770 as the family home of Joseph Scott and his wife Margaret Cottnam. The sketch captures the house and its surrounding gardens, the distinctive gambrel roof and lateral wings framing a scene that has barely changed in over 250 years. It is the only full two-and-a-half storey gambrel-roofed colonial building in Nova Scotia, and possibly in all of Canada, a detail that makes it as architecturally significant as it is visually striking. Joseph Scott was an Irish settler who arrived in Halifax in 1749 with Edward Cornwallis. He became a merchant, lumber surveyor, justice of the peace, judge, and member of the House of Assembly, and his home sat adjacent to Fort Sackville, a British Army fortification that overlooked the Bedford Basin and commanded the main overland route from Halifax into the interior of Nova Scotia. After Scott's death in 1800 the house passed through several owners, served as the Willow Park Summer Hotel at the time of Confederation, and was home to the Ternan family for 75 years before being restored and eventually purchased by the Town of Bedford in 1992. Today it is owned by Halifax Regional Municipality, managed by the Fort Sackville Foundation, and open to the public in summer as a museum, community hub, and Tea Room. Bedford itself sits at the head of the Bedford Basin, one of the largest natural harbours in the world, with a scenic waterfront trail just a short walk from the manor grounds.
