𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐭 When I created the "Reason for the Season" series, I wanted every glance at the Christmas tree to point straight to the empty tomb and the cross. In these paintings, a glowing tree stands beside the open grave or the wooden cross, with the words “The Season / The Reason” written above. The warm lights and red bow feel festive and bright, but the real focus is the saving work of Jesus Christ: His death, His resurrection, and His light that shines in every darkness. One thing I love most about this series is the contrast. The tree is familiar and cozy, but the tomb and cross show us the deeper story behind the season. I painted the light spilling out of the tomb and around the cross to show that Christmas is only the beginning of the miracle. The Baby in Bethlehem grew up to conquer sin and death. Because of Him, the grave is empty, the cross is a place of victory, and our celebrations have eternal meaning. I think about how the light on our tree is just a tiny picture of His light, reaching into our homes, our callings, our worries, and our hopes for the new year. This series was painted for the moments when we want our children and grandchildren to feel that Christmas joy is really Easter joy in disguise. "Reason for the Season" works beautifully above a mantel, near the tree, in a church foyer, or as a focal point for family devotionals.
