Handwoven on the traditional backstrap loom in the town of Chuacruz, Sololá, these placemats feature a jaspe ikat dot design deeply rooted in that community's weaving tradition. Stripes are punctuated by small ikat dots, each one the result of a labor intensive resist-dyeing process completed before a single thread is placed on the loom. Each placemat is finished with a hand stitched fringe edge. Jaspe is the Guatemalan Spanish term for ikat, a resist-dyeing technique creating the characteristic soft-edged dot pattern you see in this product.
