The Nubian people originally lived in northern Sudan and southern Egypt. Over the centuries, the Nubians were displaced. The Second World War, the construction of the Aswan Dam, the influx of Arab populations, and the current conflict in Darfur forced them to flee south as refugees and settle in Uganda, Kenya, and other countries. Over the centuries, a Nubian diaspora was formed. The baskets in this selection are antique baskets collected from the Nubian community in Kenya. They were made in the 1960s and 70s. Weavers create these baskets by wrapping palm leaf fibers around a papyrus spool and then sewing the spools together. This basketry technique is the most technically difficult. Controlling the thickness and regularity of coils requires years of practice. Diameter: 53 cm Unique piece
