Product description

This hōhin (宝瓶) teapot set is Hagi ware (萩焼), made by hand by Taian Seki in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan — a handleless teapot with lid and two cups, glazed in poured flows of vermilion, cobalt, turquoise, and yellow over a milk-white ground. The colours run and break like minerals through stone; the glaze decides its own course, and no surface in the set repeats another. A hōhin is a teapot without a handle, held directly in the hand — a form traditionally used for fine green teas brewed at gentle temperatures, where the pot stays cool enough to hold. It is tea at its most unhurried. The unglazed feet reveal the warm orange clay Hagi is known for, left bare as the tradition asks. Hagi glazes carry a fine crackle that absorbs tea over years of use, so the set will slowly deepen in tone — finished not in the kiln, but by the hands that use it. Renaras, an Amsterdam atelier known for its work with Japanese ceremonial silk, selects Hagi ware directly from established Japanese artisans. One set is available.
