Fastelavn/Shrovetide is a cosy tradition in Denmark and northern Europe where we "beat the cat out of the barrel" and eat Shrovetide candy. The danish word ‘Fastelavn’ means 'the night before Lent' and originally it was to mark the 40-day fast that lasts until Easter. Today we put candy and other sweets in the barrel, but in the old days it was a black cat. It symbolised evil, which was literally beaten away when you knocked the 'cat out of the barrel'. Today, we still keep this tradition alive by painting or sticking a black cat on the barrel. Unique Danish design printed on 300 gram paper.
