Why am I being asked for a VAT number?
If you are being asked to provide a VAT number (or both an EORI and VAT number), it is due to customs regulations requiring VAT registration to import goods. This is often the case for businesses based in countries like France or Spain.
Here’s why:
- Spain: The VAT registration threshold is zero, meaning all retailers in Spain must be VAT registered. This requirement is strictly enforced for importing international goods.
-
France: VAT registration is mandatory under the following conditions:
- When local (domestic) turnover exceed EUR 85,800 for goods or EUR 34,400 for services.
- When importing international goods, regardless of whether the VAT registration threshold has been met.
To apply for a VAT number:
- Spain: To apply for a VAT number in Spain, you can visit the official website of the Spanish Tax Agency website – On this website, you will find the form (Modelo 036 or Modelo 037) that needs to be filled out for VAT registration.
- France: To apply for a VAT number in France, you can visit the French Tax Authority website – Alternatively, you can directly contact the local tax office (“Service des Impôts des Entreprises”) to obtain the necessary forms and guidance.
