Description

The Piece A beautifully detailed antique French Limoges porcelain plate, made in Limoges, France and retailed by Ovington Bros. New York, one of America’s notable importers of fine decorative porcelain and luxury tableware during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The plate features a soft ivory-white porcelain ground with a delicate central floral spray, a garland-style floral border, cobalt blue rim accents, and gilt detailing along the edge. The design is refined without being overly fussy, which is a rare mercy in antique floral porcelain, where restraint was apparently not always invited to dinner. Its scale and decoration make it ideal as a dessert plate, bread plate, vanity tray, wall plate, or layered accent in a collected tablescape. History This piece was produced in Limoges, France, a region internationally celebrated for fine porcelain beginning in the 18th century and especially prized for export wares during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The underside bears both a French maker/import mark and the retailer stamp for Ovington Bros., New York, with the phrase “Fabriqué à Limoges”, meaning “made in Limoges.” Ovington Bros. sold fine imported china, porcelain, glass, and decorative objects to an American clientele seeking European luxury goods. Based on the country-of-origin mark, retailer stamp, and decoration style, this plate dates to approximately c. 1890–1915 Why It Belongs In Your Home This Limoges plate brings the kind of quiet refinement that instantly makes a shelf, wall, vanity, or table setting feel considered. The floral decoration is delicate and painterly, while the cobalt and gilt rim gives the piece just enough structure and polish. It would be beautiful displayed on a plate wall, used as a jewelry catchall, layered into an antique table setting, or styled on open shelving among ironstone, crystal, silver, and collected ceramics. The Ovington Bros. New York mark adds a strong retail history, giving the piece more character than anonymous floral porcelain, which, frankly, is fighting for its life in every thrift aisle in America.
