The word “mocha” originally referred to the city of Al Mocha, Yemen, which was a major coffee trading port from the 15-18th centuries. The city itself was named "Mocha" after the Arabian Mocha coffee beans that were shipped from the port and described as having a chocolate flavour. That is why today we use the word mocha to refer to chocolate flavoured coffee drinks. Chocolate was first added to coffee, along with milk, during the 18th century in Bicerin, Italy. These are the origins of the ever evolving modern day Mocha.
