Product description

The Piece The first thing you notice isn't the fox. It's the price. Someone wrote 25¢ across the upper right of the front cover in purple crayon, in a confident adult hand, and that mark has now outlived whatever card table or church basement it was written for. It's the reason this copy is more interesting than a clean one. Underneath it is a standard Beginner Books hardcover of the 1960s: cream ground, broad orange band along the bottom, and the Cat in the Hat colophon roundel at the upper right reading "I CAN READ IT ALL BY MYSELF." The covering has a woven texture and frays in fibers at both spine ends. The lower right corner of the front board has lost its covering entirely, exposing pale board. Three dark vertical marks sit in the orange band, a short pink crayon scribble runs across the grass line near the fox's forward foot, and the cream field carries general finger-darkening. Inside, the front hinge shows what appears to be a later tape repair with brown adhesive staining along the gutter — visible, competent, and load-bearing. That hinge is where these always go first. The identification point is printed small at the lower left of the leaf facing the title page: BOOK CLUB EDITION. That settles what this is, and it isn't catalogued as anything else. History & Provenance Beginner Books was founded in 1957 by Theodor Geisel with Helen Palmer Geisel and Phyllis Cerf, built on the argument that the Dick and Jane primers were dull enough to teach children to dislike reading. Fox in Socks followed in 1965 — less a controlled-vocabulary reader than an escalating articulation exercise, which is why Geisel warns the reader off on the endpaper before the text begins. The copyright line here is the original 1965 registration, LCCN 65-10484, with simultaneous Canadian publication. But the book club marking governs the dating: Random House ran a mail-order subscription club that shipped these titles to households, printed from the same plates as the trade edition, identified on the title leaf, and issued without a priced jacket. Club printings ran alongside trade printings for years, so a copy marked this way can't be pinned to a single year. Catalogued as a 1960s book club printing of the 1965 first edition. It is not a trade first, and it is not offered as one. No documentary provenance accompanies the book. The 25¢ mark is the only trace of its history between the subscription that delivered it and now. [Walter — acquisition line goes here.
