Illustrated bookmark depicting the Bay of Paulilles, hand-drawn by Marie Troff. The Bay of Paulilles, between Port-Vendres and Banyuls, is a protected site managed by the Conservatoire du Littoral. For a century it was a dynamite factory (yes, dynamite!) that occupied this bay. Today it is a natural area returned to the public, with three superb beaches, an industrial memory trail, and a workshop for restoring traditional Catalan boats. My favorite spot for picnicking in September when the tourists have gone. For lovers of converted industrial heritage, enthusiasts of Catalan boats, or simply walkers on the Côte Vermeille.
