This family-owned farm dates back to 1883, and is in its sixth generation of coffee cultivation. Eddy and Mausi Kuhl, along with their daughter Heddy, continue the time-honored tradition started by their German ancestors who immigrated to Nicaragua for the purpose of starting a coffee plantation. The Selva Negra Estate is committed to environmentally friendly and socially conscious practices. In efforts to continue sustainability, the coffee is shade-grown, the coffee by-product is used for composting, farmers use a water processing method that decreases water usage forty times than the average commercial mill, and the farmers continue the development of organic weed and pest control in their own labs.
