Description
Where Japanese silk meets the floating world. Woven at the intersection of two traditions, once. Where Japanese silk meets the floating world. Woven once, at the meeting point of two traditions. The Giverny Dream is a wall tapestry mounted from a high-density Nishijin (西陣) jacquard obi, woven in the Kyoto district that once supplied the Japanese court. The motif is suiren (睡蓮), the water lily, held in an atmospheric palette of amethyst violet, cobalt blue, teal and silver metallic thread. Not a reproduction — a textile thinking the same thought a French painter once thought looking at water: that still water holds the sky, that colour and reflection are one substance, that the hour before dark is when everything becomes most itself. The Impressionists learned from Japanese woodblock prints; here the gaze returns, in silk. At the atelier we cut a length from the obi, redesigned the composition for vertical wall format, and lined the reverse with undyed support cloth. The silk is mounted between handmade hardwood bars at top and bottom, finished with a leather hanging cord, and arrives ready to hang. The bars are part of the work, not a separate purchase. Nothing on the visible surface has been altered; the silk hangs as it was woven. This is our mottainai — new imagination brought into a living tradition. The Giverny Dream is the open door of the collection: the piece that needs no prior fluency in Japanese textiles to be understood at first sight. Its violet and silver bring depth to a bedroom, a music room, a creative studio, the bar of a boutique hotel — any room furnished for contemplation. It sits well beside dusty plum, aged silver, warm white plaster and pale oak. Each tapestry arrives with its passport from the atelier — a small handmade record of the silk's first life and its transformation, signed and dated in Amsterdam.
