Fleeing her mentally ill father who sought to marry her, she was eventually killed by him in Gheel, Belgium, where a tradition of compassionate mental health care later grew in her honor. St. Dymphna is the patron saint of those suffering from mental illness, anxiety, depression, and nervous disorders. She’s also considered a protector of mental health professionals and caregivers.
