In 2017, it is 100 years since the idea of a separate opera house in Oslo was launched for the first time. In 1917, Christian Hannevik offered to finance the project, but the plans ran aground when the shipowner went into personal bankruptcy. Until 2008, the opera in the capital was therefore a guest at both the National Theater and the Folketeateret. The first step towards today's opera house in Oslo was a study under the auspices of Den Norske Opera in 1989. 10 years later, it was decided that the opera should be located in Bjørvika, rather than Vestbanen, which was proposed in the first study. It was Snøhetta who was given the task as architect for what is today among the country's most iconic buildings.
