Description
The Mbunda speaking people from western Zambia weave these ruggedly unique and beautiful baskets. They get their name after the large Makenge bushes that grow throughout the Mongu region anywhere near water. They send out long, shallow roots that the weavers can dig up easily from the sandy soil. These baskets take over a week to complete, from digging roots, peeling them, boiling them with other plants to dye them, letting them out to dry and finally weaving them into these beauties. I find it annoying that there are no official documents available for the import duties that need to be paid at the time of delivery. I asked to pay by credit card and the driver needed to come back because he did not have a payment terminal with him. The next day he came back, I paid by MC but there are no official documents for my accountancy available.
