The sabre-toothed tiger, which lived around 20,000-10,000 years ago and belonged to the genus Smilodon, had an incredibly strong, approximately 1.2 metre long body. In contrast to all other cats, it only had a very short tail. Its large jaw with extremely long upper canine teeth had an opening angle of more than 120°: Smilodon probably preferred to hunt large, slow animals such as mammoths or bison. In the Pleistocene asphalt pits of Rancho La Brea near Los Angeles (California, USA), over 2000 skeletons of this large carnivore have been found.
