Born in 639, one of 4 saintly children of Anna, King of East Anglia (her siblings would later found monasteries). An East Anglican princess, a Fenland and Northumbrian queen and eventually the Abbess of Ely, she married and was widowed after 3 years but upheld her perpetual vow of virginity; her 2nd husband Egfrid honored her for 12 years, but when he changed his mind, the Bishop St Wilfrid of York upheld her vow and helped her separate through an annulled marriage.
