Obtained thanks to a semi-artisan spinning process and, like all of our yarns, it’s produced entirely in Italy. Made with our extra fine merino wool tops it’s slightly more twisted than the classic Piuma one, that’s to ensure strength but at the same time intensified volume. Super easy to work with, both knitted and crocheted, when it’s worked this yarn tends to puff up even more and get chunkier. Certifications Like all that isn’t enough, the dyes are Oeko-Tex standard 100 certified and is done in our dyeinghouse which is GOTS (updated to the last version) and GRS certified. The wool fiber that’s used is mulesing-free. As we don’t want to compromise on the beauty, but also not on sustainability and respect for animals. Techniques Our Piuma XXL wool yarn is worked with large knitting needles and crochet hooks, starting from size 10 and up. It is also perfect for weaving, macramé, needle punching and tufting projects. Tips With knitting needles: it is perfect for stockinette stitch, ribbing, and subtle raised patterns. With crochet: single crochet ensures a compact result and can be lightened by alternating with chain stitches. On the loom: we wove this yarn on a rigid heddle loom with a 10:10 reed (1 end/cm). Recommended only for experienced weavers as it is very delicate. It weaves beautifully, but the reed must be kept close and great care is needed—this yarn cannot withstand tension. Once woven, it is compact and soft. Suitable for both interior design and fashion accessories. An extra tip: pure wool roving is hardly twisted if at all, therefore after the first few washes it can close up slightly (doesn’t get felted!). If it’s your first time working with this type of wool yarn, it’s essential to make a small swatch (a few centimeters will suffice) to perform a hand-washing test in cold water or, even better, a dry clean. A test wash is also absolutely necessary if you plan to work with the Piuma XXL wool yarn using large needles or to create lace or very open stitches, so you can adjust your needles and measurements accordingly.
