Obsidian is an igneous rock occurring as a natural glass formed by the rapid cooling of viscous lava from volcanoes. Obsidian was used by early Native Americans and many other primitive peoples for weapons, tools, and ornaments. Ancient Aztec and Greek civilizations used the material for mirrors. A person that creates arrowheads is known as a flintknapper. In Africa, bow and arrow hunting is at least 70,000 years old but was not used by people outside of Africa until the Late Upper Paleolithic, about 15,000—20,000 years ago.
