Ethogram: Override continues my study of the hand as a site of decision. Mounted like a specimen, it reads less as an object and more as a record of behavior: the moment a human interrupts a default. Where User Compliance asked how technology mediates our bond with the natural world, this piece focuses on judgment at the point of touch. I use AI in the studio. It speeds production and opens creative routes I value. It also rides on heavy infrastructures that convert material resources into acceleration. The work sits inside that tension and treats the gesture as data: what, exactly, do I choose to allow, and when do I intervene. Override implies discernment: when to accept acceleration, when to cut power. The title is not a slogan but a question I return to in practice. Cataloging the act as an “ethogram” is my way of paying attention to those choices, frame by frame, before they calcify into habit.
