Description
This unique traditional Burmese decorative appliqué tapestry consists of cloth figures - representing deities - sewn onto a cotton/velvet background and heavily embroidered and embellished with sequins and beads. The word "kalaga", the popular word we use to refer to these, means "curtain" although the Burmese call them, in their language "gold thread embroidery"). The art form dates to the 19th century although ours are relatively recently made. This one measures 55 x 42" (140 x 107 cm).
