Description
A mashrabiya is an ornate wooden screen typically used in Middle Eastern or Islamic architecture. First seen during the 15th century, mashrabiyas had a variety of functions. First and foremost, they were beautiful and added aesthetical value. Beyond that, they were designed to circulate air, control light, and create privacy for the occupants while allowing them to see out. While Fathy didn't use traditional wooden mashrabiyas often, he did integrate the concept into the clerestory punches in his adobe structures. They're a subtle nod to the history and functionality of regional architecture in Egypt. This choker necklace features a mashrabiya in the center surrounded by two arches.
