Description
Caerphilly Castle holds a rich history in its walls, dating back to the 13th century. Gilbert de Clare, known as “The Red Earl “, due to his fiery temper and red hair, was the mastermind behind the construction of this magnificent fortification. The castle was part of de Clare’s efforts to maintain control of Glamorgan and saw continuous battles with native Welsh rulers and Llewellyn ap Gruffyd, who burned down some of its fortifications fuelled by his desire for the crown. Henry III had granted de Clare the authority to take over the land of Welshmen who supported the opposition, and with Llewellyn forced back into Brecon, de Clare was able to finish his project in the heart of Caerphilly. The story of de Clare’s doomed marriage to Alice of Angouleme, known as the “Green Lady of Caerphilly Castle,” adds a touch of mystery to the castle’s history. Alice died of a broken heart after her husband, de Clare, discovered her affair and killed her lover Gruffudd the Fair.
