Description
The Red Castle, Castell Coch, was once home to a successful commercial vineyard in Britain. Lord Bute tasked his head gardener, Mr Andrew Pettigrew, with creating a vineyard in the castle’s garden. In order to learn about winemaking, Mr. Pettigrew visited some of France’s finest vineyards, taking notes on what he observed. He discovered that a certain variety of grapes would be able to withstand the harsh Welsh weather, and in 1875, he oversaw the planting of 2,000 vines in the sheltered location beneath Castell Coch. The vineyard proved successful, producing four hogsheads of wine in 1884 and even more in 1887 for Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Sadly, the First World War brought an end to wine production at Castell Coch and the vineyard was uprooted in 1920. Today, the vineyard’s legacy lives on in a fragrance inspired by its history. The scent features sweet raspberry and lemon, mixed fruit, cedarwood, and hints of pencil lead, grapevine, and sawdust.
