There were 12,000 people who turned up to watch the first show jumping race in Holmenkollbakken in 1892. Six of the participants, half as many as there were doctors present, landed standing. The first hill record was set at 22 meters by Arne Ustvedt with a natural approach and jump from twigs and snow. The hill, like today's facility, had a plain and spectator area at Besserudtjernet. Holmenkollbakken has since been rebuilt 19 times, including in 1910 when it had its first jump made of stone. During the Second World War, Holmenkollbakken was used as a military installation before it was upgraded in the late 1940s.
