Product description

This is a handwoven rustic-looking, raffia textile which is sometimes referred to as a Kuba cloth, from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Also known as Madiba this African plant fiber cloth was made by the men of the Kuba tribe in the Kasai region of the Congo called the Kuba Kingdom. The cloth was made from fiber from the raffia palm (Raphia Vinifera). It normally took about one day to make two or three lengths of cloth depending on the skill level of the craftsman. The cloth is used as money for Bride price, ceremonial payments, and as tributes to the Chiefs. Kuba cloths are beautiful pieces of African art and look great displayed as wall hangings. The diameter is approximately 140 by 24 inches. Very versatile, great for artwork wall-hangings (Framed or unframed), upholstery fabrics, soft furnishing (Cushions, decorative pillows, etc.), and table runners/coverings. Note: : Pictures are exact representations of the item. Most of our pieces have spent decades on at least two continents and are treasured by several owners. Â Small splits, scrapes, cracks, and some scents are normal in their patina, attesting to their age and extensive use. This does not constitute damage. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. We sell in bulk also with bulk pricing!!!!

Made in: South Africa
