Description
The Phare du Four is a picturesque offshore lighthouse in Brittany, France, in the Iroise Sea, near the entry of the Aber-Ildut estuary. Located on an underwater rock, it is among the most exposed lighthouses within the region, having to endure regular pounding by powerful Atlantic waves. Built between 1869 and 1874, the 28-meter-high granite tower marks the treacherous shallows of the Chenal du Four, a significant sea lane along the Breton coast. Its black lantern against the grey stone is an imposing sight in turbulent seas. Automated since 1993, it remains an essential navigational aid in one of France's most difficult waters. This masterful depiction has preserved the determination and character of this isolated lighthouse, a monument to the genius and dedication of those who built and maintained it.
