Description

The Piece Kashmiri Bone Inlay Trinket Box with Carved Bone Elephant Srinagar, Kashmir, India c. 1960s This small decorative box features hand-carved bone inlay set into a dark wooden base, forming intricate floral motifs across the lid and sides. Accompanying the box is a small carved bone elephant, a traditional souvenir carving associated with the same region. The underside of the box retains its original label reading: “Guaranteed Hand Made by Suffering Moses – Srinagar, Kashmir, India.” Pieces like this were produced by Kashmiri artisan workshops during the mid-20th century and exported through handicraft markets and specialty import shops. Primary Description The box is constructed using traditional bone inlay techniques, where individual pieces of carved bone are fitted into a carved wooden surface to create decorative patterns. Each floral element is hand-engraved and arranged into a dense botanical composition framed by etched borders. The contrast between the pale bone inlay and the darker carved background gives the piece its distinctive visual texture. Accompanying the box is a small hand-carved bone elephant, a classic form of Kashmiri handicraft carving often sold alongside decorative boxes and small keepsake containers. Together the pieces form a charming example of mid-century artisan export craft. About the Maker The label identifies the piece as being produced by “Suffering Moses,” a workshop or export brand associated with Kashmiri handicrafts from Srinagar, Kashmir. During the 1950s–1970s, artisan workshops in Srinagar specialized in bone inlay, wood carving, and decorative handicrafts intended for export markets. These items were widely sold in tourist shops and imported to Europe and North America through global handicraft distributors. The unusual name printed on the label is believed to have been used as a recognizable export brand for handmade goods produced in the region. Historical Context Following India’s independence in 1947, Kashmir developed a strong international reputation for handcrafted decorative objects. Workshops in Srinagar produced intricate bone inlay boxes, carved figurines, and decorative furniture influenced by Mughal floral design traditions. These objects became popular in Western homes during the 1960s and early 1970s, when global artisan handicrafts were widely imported through gift shops, cultural stores, and international trade fairs. The floral carving style seen on this box reflects the ornamental patterns common in Kashmiri decorative arts.
