Alongside the strikingly beautiful nature at the meeting between fjord and mountain, Ålesund has become famous for its characteristic Art Nouveau architecture. The construction of towers, spires and ornaments on the house facades was a result of the infamous town fire in 1904, which is also the origin of the term "not since Aalesund burned". Just a few years after the fire, over 300 brick houses had already been built in which the Art Nouveau style of the time - also known as art nouveau - was mixed with Norwegian cultural references and materials.
