Description
Handwoven on the traditional backstrap loom in the town of Chuacruz, Sololá, this runner features a jaspe ikat dot design deeply rooted in that community's weaving tradition. Stripes are punctuated by small ikat dots, each one the result of a labor intensive resist-dyeing process completed before a single thread is placed on the loom. Running the full length of the center is a hand stitched randa, a traditional Guatemalan embroidery technique, adding a second layer of handcraft to an already extraordinary piece. Each short end is finished with a hand stitched fringe edge. Backstrap weaving is one of the oldest textile traditions in the Americas. The loom itself is a simple but extraordinary tool, one end tied to a tree or post, the other strapped around the weaver's body, allowing the weaver to control the tension of the fabric through their own movement. Every piece produced on a backstrap loom carries the physical presence of the person who made it. Elegant as a table runner or draped across the foot of a bed, this piece is designed to be lived with and passed down. Jaspe is the Guatemalan Spanish term for ikat, a resist-dyeing technique creating the characteristic soft-edged dot pattern you see in this product. Material: 100% Cotton Care: Handwash in cold water using earth friendly soap. Hang to dry.
