While Sovereignty wasn’t leading yet, he ultimately went on to win it all. This was one of the more challenging Derby scenes I’ve painted—the track was so wet that day, and capturing the reflections, motion, and energy of the mud was no easy task. But I love painting Derby scenes every year as a way to honor my hometown of Louisville and the magic that surrounds this tradition.
