Thanatos, the God of Death, son of Nyx (Night), brother of Hypnos (Sleep). Thanatos is often described as merciless and indiscriminate, as Death always is. Though often confused with Hades, Thanatos is the personification of Death, while Hades is the ruler of the Underworld. Thanatos claims the souls of the deceased, and grants the souls freedom from their bodies. Hermes guides the souls to the Charon, who then, with proper payment, ferries them across the Styx, where they are overseen by Hades.
