Built using Cream City Brick, the lighthouse faced significant deterioration due to exposure to the harsh elements, prompting its encasement in boilerplate in 1900. This modification gave the lighthouse its iconic striped appearance, which continues to make it one of the most recognizable structures on the Great Lakes.
