Wholesale Scheibe Folding Luggage Rack with Floral Tapestry Straps, c. 1960s

The Piece Three broad tapestry straps cross a long white-painted wooden frame, each woven in a repeating pattern of small red-and-cream flowers enclosed by scrolling forest-green cartouches on a warm ivory ground. Against the spare geometry of the painted wood, the textile does nearly all of the ornament: floral without becoming precious, traditional without disguising the practical object underneath. The frame folds on a classic X-form. Two pairs of gently curved wooden legs cross at the center and are stabilized by a turned cylindrical stretcher, allowing the stand to open into a rigid platform and collapse nearly flat when not in use. The long upper rails extend slightly beyond the legs, giving a suitcase a broad, secure landing surface while the three flexible straps distribute its weight. The white finish appears to be original to the piece. The surviving gold-and-black manufacturer’s label is applied directly over the painted rail and reads “This Is A Genuine Scheibe Product — Fine Quality Accessories Since 1914.” Time has taken the finish back to bare wood in several places along the feet and lower legs, leaving exactly the sort of wear expected from decades of suitcases being set down, opened, packed, and dragged away again. History & Provenance Scheibe specialized in folding household and hospitality accessories, and the luggage stand became one of the firm’s enduring forms. The manufacturer’s own label traces the company to 1914, when practical folding furniture of this kind was increasingly finding its way into hotels, boarding houses, dressing rooms, and well-appointed guest bedrooms. The design survived because there was very little to improve. A folding wooden X-frame takes almost no room when stored, opens without tools or hardware to manage, and keeps a suitcase off both the floor and the bed. Scheibe elevated that utilitarian form with finished hardwood frames and decorative textile webbing, turning an essentially commercial object into something suitable for the domestic bedroom. This example is most consistent with mid-century production, likely the 1960s. The ivory floral tapestry, white-painted frame, streamlined construction, and period Scheibe foil label all fit the traditional revival furnishings popular during the era. Unlike modern hotel racks with black nylon webbing and anonymous metal frames, this one was intended to remain visible in the room.
