How It's Made Artisans expertly employ tanka embroidery and appliqué techniques, accentuating the textures, design, and colors of stunning cotton and silk products. They apply simple tanka straight-stitch to create varied patterns including adjusting stitch length. Tanka stitch is also used to overlay appliqué work, mirrors, threads, and beads to a base fabric. Block printed and solid fabrics of various combinations are used for appliqué to give each piece a unique feel and expression. All fabrics used are dyed or block printed with azo-free dyes. The textiles are sourced from a number of different groups; many of which are local artisan communities or non-profits. Some of the fabric is handwoven.
