A handcrafted rectangular plate from MORI KOUGEI. The surface is built from natural wood veneer arranged in one of two patterns, each finished with one of two surfaces: – "Rays" — 光線貼り (Kousen-bari): a radial composition conceived by Kenichi Mori, second-generation craftsman. – Marquetry: a precise geometric arrangement systematized by his son Hiroyuki Mori, the current director. Finishes: – Indigo: natural fermentation indigo dye, native to Tokushima. – Urushi: layered Japanese lacquer, valued for depth and water resistance. The rectangular form gives the pattern length to travel. Suited for the dining table, fine dining presentations, or as a display surface for objects and gifts. A note on the makers. MORI KOUGEI began in 1953 with the first generation, Masaichi Mori. The patterns and surfaces of today's product line are shaped through a quiet collaboration between Kenichi Mori — second-generation craftsman and Mokuga artist — and his son Hiroyuki Mori, the current director, who systematized the broader design vocabulary the workshop now uses across trays, plates, clocks, and stands. Tokushima itself shapes the work. The region is known both for fine woodcraft, a legacy of the Awa boat builders who turned their skills to furniture and interior work, and for natural fermentation indigo, a centuries-old dye tradition that still informs the deep blue tones in the studio's finishes. Slight variations in grain and tone are part of the natural material. Each plate is unique.
