These baskets are handmade by women in the Chivi district of south-eastern Zimbabwe, near the border with Mozambique. They are made by the so-called “spiral” or “colombin” technique: a continuous frame made of vegetable fibers is wound on itself and each coil is sewn to the previous one by sisal strands. Very sturdy baskets are thus obtained. The use of sisal strands of different colors allows these baskets to be given delicate geometric patterns. These baskets can be used in many ways in home decor.
