The town of Vist, known locally as Viss (Wiss), lies in a valley of the same name, seventeen kilometres southwest of Golpayegan and twenty kilometres west of Khansar in Iran. Although Vist is now well known for basketry and willow weaving, its most important craft has been rug weaving. These rugs, woven by the women of Vist without a drawn pattern, have been entered on Iran’s national register of intangible cultural heritage. Vist’s Chaharbagh, or ‘four-garden’, rugs are distinguished by the frequent repetition of the garduneh-ye mehr, or ‘wheel of Mithra’, alongside crosses and numerous ziggurat motifs. They found a strong market in Europe in the years following the Second World War. The orally transmitted weaving techniques, together with the distinctive designs and patterns, may point to the antiquity of this tradition and its continuity in Vist from ancient times to the present. Vist rugs follow two distinct, consistent design traditions, known as boteh and Visti (Yavari). The Visti design is more common in the region’s production. Woven in the same basic composition for many years, it has a character of its own. The motifs of Viss rugs can be classified into three main groups: plants, animals, and geometric forms, each with its own subdivisions. The principal palette of Vist rugs consists of six colours: lac red (crimson), navy blue, pink, yellow with a green undertone, white and brown. Classified among village rugs, Vist rugs are among the least known in this group. More recently, their distinctive designs and remarkable affinity with a modernist aesthetic have brought them considerable recognition and a following among designers around the world. This is a beautiful Vist rug in the design known as Visti. Alongside all the characteristics of an authentic Vist weaving, it features distinctive motifs such as the boteh, or paisley, goats, the Tree of Life and the Pole Star, among others.
