Description
The western region of El Salvador was once inhabited by the Maya, who consumed a sacred cacao-based drink and used the beans as currency. During the Spanish colonization, cacao cultivation became widespread in El Salvador, but 100 years later, the fruit has almost become extinct. The 350-hectare Hacienda San José Real de la Carrera is now one of the largest private plantations in Central America and has a facility where cocoa is processed into chocolate. Genetics: Local Acriollado varieties.
