The third installment of my "Tucson Tales" series highlights the Snake Bridge (also called Rattle Snake Bridge or Diamondback Bridge), one of Tucson’s most iconic landmarks. It was designed by local artist Simon Donovan and the construction was completed in May 2002. It stretches 280 feet long over Broadway Blvd. The north end of the bridge features a giant rattle snake head with 10-foot support beam “fangs” and giant eyes that used to glow at night. On the south end there’s a 20-foot-tall statue of the snake’s tail, which used to have a motion sensor that would make a rattling sound whenever someone walked past it. The bridge has won over a dozen national design awards and was even recognized at an international competition in Italy.
