A pursuit ensued, the suspect's vehicle was disabled, and he fled on foot. Chief was released. As he and his handler closed in, the suspect drew a pistol and fired at Chief's handler. K-9 Chief leaped between them, and a bullet struck him in the left eye, which resulted in the loss of his eye and a broken jaw. This heroic act saved Chief's handler's life but forced Chief to retire at the age of only three, leaving his handler with the financial burden.
