Octavia Butler (1947–2006) was a groundbreaking author whose visionary storytelling transformed the landscape of science fiction and speculative thought. Born in Pasadena, California, she began crafting stories as a child and went on to write fifteen novels, along with influential short stories and essays. In 1995, she became the first science fiction writer to receive a MacArthur Fellowship, earning recognition as a literary pioneer. Butler’s works, ranging from the Hugo Award–winning Bloodchild to the Nebula Award–winning Parable of the Talents, explored power, identity, and survival through richly imagined worlds.
