Description
The Buddha in meditation is perhaps the most important symbol in Buddhism. It shows the core method of spiritual practice taught by the Buddha. This basic method is called "mindfulness of breathing". The meditator sits in the posture shown in this statue, and remains aware of their breath. "Breathing in, I know I am breathing in. Breathing out, I know I am breathing out." This practice called vippasana, is the most widely practiced meditation in the world. Eventually, one lets go of the inner words that tie one to the breath, and simply allows it to rest on awareness. When it is practiced regularly, it creates an awareness that remains even outside of meditation, and one's life can undergo a deep and subtle transformation, allowing one to be in the present moment. When one is truly present, the tendency of the mind to create unpleasant thoughts disappears. These thoughts are the basis of unhappiness, inner struggles, and they are what prevents us from experiencing happiness.
