The hazelnut is the fruit of the hazel tree, and the term also refers to the seed (or kernel) contained in this fruit, which is edible. Hazelnuts are generally grouped in small clusters called "trochets," consisting of two or three fruits. They are also often used grated into powder, crushed, or cut into chips in pastry and confectionery. An edible oil is also extracted from them.
